Have you ever come back from vacation and need to rest? We understand. The same thing happened to us but we have found ways to enjoy our vacations in a better way: Traveling like a local. It's time to leave the long itineraries behind and live day by day, traveling light and seeing as much as you can.

First, you have to define that there are many different types of trips. Those that are express and you just want to get out of your routine and disappear. The ones that are to lie on a couch all day and occasionally get into the pool, without leaving the hotel. Those who want to know the whole city or town for new photos for instagram. Those of extreme tourism with extreme sports. The ones we occupy to get to know cultures, stories and people to nourish us, reflect and be more integral people with different perspectives. Clearly there is no good or bad type, the ideal would be to try them all.

And since travel has become very accessible to all budgets and destinations, we really have the possibility to choose well our mission when traveling. The Slow Travel movement is all about promoting local food, producers and traditions to enrich tourists as well as locals.

Prioritize connections between cultures, tastes, perspectives and seek to enrich both parties equally. Keep in mind that the place you are visiting has as much to offer you as you have to offer them, it is not just another tourist destination, it is a completely independent and authentic ecosystem.

Is it getting your attention? Read on to find out how to do it the best way.

Do a little research, not too much, just what is necessary.

Locate the place where you will be staying and how far it is from places where you will be able to satisfy your basic needs. Research the current situation of the place where you will be staying in terms of safety, culture, seasons, local cuisine.

Try to travel in low season

Yes, we know this is complicated for many people because of office hours but you can do it, please give yourself a chance to live a tourist area in low season so you can see all the places without crowds of people and at your own pace.

Talking with locals

They will be able to tell you better than anyone else the history of the place, the best places to eat, drink and hang out. I bet they will even offer to show you around and be your personal guide.

Stay for a minimum of two weeks

Yes, yes, yes, yes, we can't see you but we can imagine your impressed face, don't worry. It sounds like a long time but it really is a good amount of days to explore, get to know and intrude into the daily routine of the community. You will have the time to rest, to get to know, to reflect, to go out and even stay at home if you need to.

The benefits of doing this type of trip are many, but for us the most notable is being able to hear new stories, different perspectives on life, get out of your routine and learn how life is lived elsewhere at different paces and with different priorities. You will come back very rested and you will have seen many more places than if you went on an express trip, the overall experience of your trip will have increased in an impressive way.
